Often times, people ask questions regarding the division of Americans because of this, that and the other.

Are we really at a stalemate because of political differences or are those differences acting as a checks and balance system, preventing one party from too much control?

You can't have a nation as diverse as the US and not have a division. It's still a 2 party system and that tends to divide people right down the middle. Look at the vote percentages when we elect a president. It's almost always 50/50.

Not so much a stalemate as an alternating power grab between the two dominant parties who have excluded everyone else from the game.

Democrats and Republicans (in office) are generally more concerned with staying in office and remaining in power than actually serving their constituents -- and this has resulted in a partisan power block that gives Congress over a 95% incumbency rate.

But yes, the country is divided three ways -- those who support those two political parties, often (not always) blindly -- and those who are caught in the middle, unable to do much except choosing between the lesser of two problems.

In my opinion there is really a great divide in this country politically. I don't think it will bring us down and it can be overcome (even if it's temporary as in 9/11). I think both of the major parties have large factions that are way on the left and right sides of the aisle. Not much going on in the middle.

Well the old saying "divide and conquer" seems to be applying to the American people. What is the divider? Politics and party lines.

Yes we are divided, but not for long. George Bush has united this country in a way that Republicans can't fathom. He has pissed off so many people that the next president may well have a mandate. Go Hillary!

Of course, each individual should be allowed to choose what they believe, think, dress, etc. They should be allowed to pursue their own happiness. Not everyone is going to choose the same path, and liberty allows that to happen.
