You can buy live rock from several websites, but I've always bought mine through local pet stores that carry saltwater. The advantages are you can pick out the pieces yourself based on the size, shape, color, and types of organisms that are growing on them, plus you don't have to pay for the shipping! (Even though the prices of what you see online may seem less expensive, add in the shipping and handling charges to figure out your real cost to compare what you'll actually spend.)

Another difference is that what you get in your local store will be in tanks with running water, where what you order may come shipped wrapped in wet newspaper (to cut down on weight/shipping charges), so there can be considerable die-off in order rock, therefore a longer curing time.

You'll also get to see different types of live rock if the store is a large enough one. Marshall Island, tonga, or Fuji are considered to be the best by some, but I also like Atlantic or Carribean aquacultured rock for the color and variety of organisms.
