Since ***** League Record books were not kept consistently and thoroughly as needed, the answer is not definitive.

In official league games that were documented, Josh Gibson never hit more than 17 homers in a season, but that was in just the 29 games that were documented in 1939.

Some credit him with having 75 home runs in 1931, 72 in 1932, 69 in 1934, and 84 in 1936, though those numbers likely include exhibitions.

His legendary 800 or 900 career home runs, is well overstated. Recent research estimates only 150-200 of his home runs were in official ***** League games, many of his other home runs were hit in exhibitions agains inferior competition.

In fact, many historians credit Turkey Stearns 172 home runs as the career ***** League record.

If I hear this crap about Josh Gibson one more time I'm going to scream!! All you have to do is research the 10th addition of the Official Major League Baseball Encyclopedia and you will find the facts on Josh Gibson.

During his entire career he only played in 501 games. He hit a grand total of 147 career home runs and never hit more than 17 home runs in any one season.

He was considered a below average catcher and was on drugs and alcohol most of his career. He finally died at age 37 never living up to his potential. The legend of Josh Gibson is nothing but lies. You can thumbs down me all you like but you can't change the truth.

Well stated Kent K
