Where I live the lunar eclipse didn't happen until 2 days later.

You were lucky enough to see a total eclipse of the moon. Mars wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary that night. Reports of it looking as big as the moon are a perennial email hoax based on its very close opposition in August 2003. But Mars is too far away to ever appear as anything other than a bright point of light to the naked eye. In 2003 it was brighter than Jupiter, but still only looked like a very bright star.

You did see the moon.
Your mom, as sweet as I'm sure she is, is completely wrong.
You saw the lunar eclipse, which will make the moon appear dark red. You did not see Mars the size of the full moon (dear god, will this hoax never die?)

Mars never gets any closer than 35 MILLION miles from Earth, it will never appear as anything other than a bright reddish pinpoint of light. To look the size of the moon, it would have to be about 500,000 miles from Earth - never gonna happen.

Right now, Mars rises in the east around 2:00 am. By December, when Mars will be at opposition (the closest it gets to the Earth), it will rise earlier and be a bright reddish star in the sky most of the night (similar to how Jupiter has looked for the past few months).

You were seeing a total lunar eclipse. What happened was earth completely blocked the moon from the sun. The reason it was red was because light from the sun was refracted in the earth's atmosphere and the red light was hitting, for lack of a better word, the moon.

As for seeing mars sorry to disappoint you but mars will never be that close the earth. That was merely an internet hoax passed along by email, I got it too. If you ever do see mars it will only be a tiny speck of light in the sky. It will look like a star will a tinge of red. And mars will appear many more times but it will never be as big as the moon.

Super mistaken is what you are.

The claim that Mars will make its closest approach to Earth on August 27 is a hoax that goes around via email every August since 2003. That was the year Mars actually made its closest approach in centuries, yet even so it never looked bigger than a point of light to the naked eye. Lots of chumps stayed up on August 27 hoping to get their once-in-a-lifetime look at Mars only to disappointed. Mars will never appear as big as the Moon.

Think about it. How could Mars jump its orbit, cross 50 million km of space, appear in the sky for a few seconds, then jump back and continue on its way? Short answer, it couldn't.

So what did you see? I dunno. Perhaps you saw the Moon passing through the Earth's outer shadow. That could make it turn red. Or maybe it was an airplane. Whatever it was, it wasn't Mars.

God, I thought we were done with this. Read this. Get your mom to read it also.

It was the moon, getting close to the horizon which makes it look red in any urban area and slightly less so in the country. If you were looking through your closed window, that would have had an effect also.

Or, if you say it was the 27th at 3.00am, do you mean the morning of the 28th? In that case, it was the eclipse. And it happened at the same time for everyone, as others have said.

It was not Mars. Believe me. Or don't.

No matter where you live, the eclipse took place on the same night, August 27/28. It was the eclipse you saw. Mars can never appear larger than a pinpoint to the naked eye.

Not only did you not see what you thought you saw, you were misinformed as well.

The closest pass between Earth and Mars in recent history was on August 27, 2003, a distance of 56 million kilometers. This would make Mars appear several times larger than it normally does, but nowhere near the size of the Moon.

The apparent size of Mars was dramatically overstated in 2003 emails, and this email was simply repeated in 2007.

You must have seen the lunar eclipse, because Mars never Ever gets close enough to show a discernible disk without telescopic aid.
