What is the fundamental diffrence between pure science and applied science?

The pure scientist is interested in knowledge for its own sake, and doesn't care much about how useful his knowledge is.

The applied scientist typically is working towards a practical goal. There is a real-world problem to solve, and the knowledge generated will be directly used somehow by somebody.
