You cannot know that you're doing the right thing. All you can do is give it your best effort. We all make mistakes. Try to take all the information in that you can. Weigh the pros and cons. Then do what you think is best for you.
Don't spend forever forgiving yourself for mistakes. Life is too short.

You don't say what thing your doing, so here goes.
I have always seen life as something that weaves it's own way, you go to school and start to be one thing and somehow you end up doing something completely different.
My Psyc professor once told me, life just evolves, we can't really plan it or force it, it will be what ever it will be, just hang on and enjoy the journey.

from the time you were able to tell right from wrong and from all your exposures as to what is the right thing and what is the socially unacceptable thing, your senses tells you that what you are doing or about to do is right or wrong. if you are not confident about your actions, then you need to brush up on your basics of what is right and wrong.
