Ian Fleming's "Live and Let Die" was an extremely stereotypical novel and hardly a best seller, yet was a successful first Bond entry for Roger Moore and featured one of the series' most memorable title songs (by Paul and Linda McCartney). Another Fleming novel, "Goldfinger" was a disappointing Bond vehicle, but was box office "gold" for Sean Connery along with it's title song. A good number of Alfred Hitchcock's films were superior to their literary sources, too.

The Green Mile. I had a hard time getting into the book, but the movie was better visually.

Harvey, with Jimmy Stewart. Terrible book, movie made it mainly because Jimmy was a big star at that point.

Harry Potter. JK Rowling was turned down by every publisher in England and finally came to the US as a last resort.
