A skill is: a learned power of doing something competently : a developed aptitude or ability
A talent is: a special, often creative or artistic aptitude.
So you could have a natural talent in music but it would take skill to play the piano well.

Talent is an inborn ability. Skill is something that you learn, as you would the alphabet, from someone who knows the answers.
My field is the performing arts, and I believe that if you can have only one of the two, talent is best.
Stars are people with both; because the public, who generally do not have either talent or skill in the performer's field, DO have a talent of their own: and that is the innate ability to recognize "the real thing" when they see it.

Both are similar but come about in a different way. Talent is usually something you're born with and just happens naturally. Skill is usually something learned or acquired. Skills have to be achieved but talent just happens.

Talent is being able to hear a piano piece played once or twice...and being able to play the same piece yourself, perfectly.
Skill is following direction, and learning the piece over time...
playing it perfectly after practicing for just such an accomplishment.
