I'm not sure what trouble shawnb has had with shark products since she wasn't specific, but mine have been great.
They are basically a heating element that generates steam by heating the water in a tank. There's not much to go wrong with 'em.

Anyway, like I say, they work really well. Not just on floors either. I've used them on pretty much anything that needs heavy duty cleaning.

Any bathroom surface, car tires, any kind of floor surface, kitchens, windows, clothes, etc.

The heat and pressure make whatever you are cleaning dissappear quickly.

I have not used the steam mop but have purchased other Shark products in the past and have had to toss them. Unless they have stepped up in quality, I wouldn't purchase another Shark product.
