i work on drosophila melanogastor for a living, they are the common fruit fly. they feed on yeast which can be found on almost any fruit, the lay eggs on the surface sfter a day or two they hatch and turn into larve/grubs, and eat into their food for nourishment. this period last for four days. after four days they form a chrysiliss type structure where they break down and turn into a fly inthe cocoon and emerge four days later. whole process from egg to fly is 10 days at room temperature, takes longer if they are colder. they emerge and after 12 hours they are mature enough to mate and can lay their own eggs in fruit somewhere. they can live up to about a month, but if you have one fly emerging you can be certain there will be more an adult female can lay between 50 and 200 eggs a day.also they do well incompost heap and general exposed vegetables and fruit hense the name. probably a little more info than you were looking for hope it helps

Mature flies lay eggs in the fruit, and when they mature they hatch and come out. They can be seen in bananas as those dark spots on the peel.

I have no rotting or fermenting fruit laying around, and yet within mere moments of my opening a bottle of red wine, several fruit flies appear. Prior to my opening of the bottle, there are no fruit flies present. But within moments of opening the bottle, tiny winged winos can be found buzzing my local air space. I'm utterly mystified!
