I scanned through a few years, and he is usually among the tops in the league if he was playing a normal amount of games at short. I would have to do a more thorough search to say if was or was not the best defensive shortstop of his day, but a winning club converted him from outfielder/third base to short. I don’t think this would indicate a terrible fielder.

1905 was Wagner’s first year exclusively as a shortstop.
He led the league in total chances, was second in put-outs, third in assists, second in double plays.
1906, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st.

His career fielding percentage and range factors at short are both well above his league’s averages.

His adjusted batting—which takes into account league norms—is 150 over his career. Rodriguez, while great is at 147 and probably about to leave his prime and see this go down a bit. (Ripken is at 112; Jeter, an arguably inferior shortstop on a day by day basis, is at 123. Neither are close to Wagner. Ozzie Smith was defensively brilliant but below average offensively.)

Wagner is still #1.

Honus Wagner may have had great offensive stats, but his fielding stats are atrocious. He may have only played 9+ years at SS, but A-Rod won two gold gloves there while putting up monster offensive numbers. I'll pick A-Rod over Ozzie.

the greatest offensive SS ever is Alex Rodriguez
the greatest defensive SS ever is either Ozzie Smith or Omar Vizquel
keep in mind, even though Ozzie has 2 more gold gloves than Vizquel, Omar had to compete with guys like miguel tejada derek jeter, and a-rod in the AL
smith didn't have any competition
AND it's possible vizquel might win his 12th gold glove this year

Honus Wagner dominated the game like no shortstop ever has. Of course, that was 100 years ago.

i would say A rod
best ever the yeankess would be better off with Arod at Short and Jetter at 2nd.
than they could have gotten Nomar at 3rd.
it would have been the best infeild in baseball.
