I have to share a funny with you. i went and googled this and laughed for my college roomie and I in the early 70's serendipitously discovered a wonderful cockroach trap, We had a long necked wine bottle with some wine in the bottom and it had a wide flat bottom so it worked the same as these apple juice sweet water in the bottles. So I know they work as we opened our kitchen cupboard and in first horror freaked at a wine bottle full of cockroaches but then shouted with glee to have found such a simple trap as those rascals are so gross and very hard to trap. So I know I can catch these wasps/hornets the same way. How funny yes ???

If what you are refering to as a hornet is a yellowjacket, there are several manufacturers that make traps. They work on the basis of a sex phermone to attract the males and the queens. They are somewhat expensive to keep working. You need to replace the attractant about every 7 days.

You can also buy the type of trap that you add a liquid and that attracts all wasp type insects. These are less expensive, and using apple juice works very well. You simply put a couple of inches in the container and leave it. The wasps and hornets will climb in and then drown. Until the trap is so full that there is no liquid left exposed, you do not need to tend them.

Which ever trap you use, put them around the perimeter fence of your property to attract them to the edges of your yard, leaving the center of the yard for you to use.

Keep in mind that yellowjackets, hornets, and wasps all will forage up to 1 mile for food, so they may be coming from well past your neighbor's house.

Unfortunately, there is not repellant for these insects that works. Anyone that trys to sell you one is no better than the old west "snake oil" salesman.

Call your local health department and report the hornets as a health hazard. They will deal with your neighbor and the problem. Anything you try to do will likely get you in trouble with the law. But the health department has the authorisation to deal with public health issues, including dangerous wildlife (in your case, the hornets).
