Why not learn both:)
You will learn some programming as you learn Linux.
But no one can really answer your question without knowing your location.
I would look at programming anyway and have a 'play' with Linux.
With Linux you are looking at mainly network admin and support. Whereas Programming you could be looking at either a regular job or freelance. To do well in programming at your age you need to have some specialist knowledge that will allow you to program in that particular field better than anyone who does not know.

I am a network administrator I run a Windows server based network at one site and a Novell based server at another. At home I have a mixed network which includes Linux.
I also do occasional programming usually VB inside office.

Well, linux admin can be done quicker than programming to a level for a job. (Ive done both)

Plus, if you have any experience in DOS then you will find it handy. The power of linux admin is at the text level, and there are many "raised in windows" that try to admin linux from inside the xwindows environment.

Also I feel that there is real power in learning an operating system well and then dabbling in programming from there instead of only learning programming from "inside" an OS or running on top of an OS that you dont really grasp.

Do both. Linux is an excellent operating system, and an excellent programming environment.

As far as getting a job, well that depends on you. You have experiences and skills from many years of working that can be transferred over.

i'm 25 so I dont be conscious of what that is like getting to understand stuff once you're 40 seven yet getting to understand a programming language is exciting in case you have an pastime in it. So consistent with that, in case you like programming and becoming issues then i think of you would be waiting to evaluation it. in case you detect it uninteresting then you definitely wont be waiting to evaluation it except you're very desperate. a great form of the people in this website make programming out to be an undemanding project which you would be able to purely %. up. a great form of people fake like they be conscious of what they are speaking approximately yet they dont. So do not be discouraged by using fact getting to understand the suggestions of programming does take a great form of deep thinking, yet lower back, you are able to truly rejoice with it. I dont be conscious of something approximately community administration yet i be conscious of I dont like Linux. that is purely my very own determination although. in case you prefer to perform a little variety of community administration that is advisable to seem into getting an MCSE certification. i think of you will desire a level to get a activity in the two field yet no you at the instant are not too previous to evaluation.

To be honest - probably not. The mass of kids who are getting out of school with degrees in this area will bury you. There is no reason an employer would pick you at your age - with no experience. I am in this field and have been for 41 years. If I didn't have my experience I couldn't begin to get a job.
