Social mores sometimes get in the way of a strict following of the letter of the law. We go all out for the killing of a police officer although his life may not be inherently more valuable than the average citizen. Male-on-female crime is generally seen as more heinous because of their vunerability as would attacks on the very old. Female-on-male crime of this nature would be seen by some, including some victims, as having been done a favor......

There have been several cases of women, usually school teachers who have slept with underage boys. They go to jail too.

It's just far less common for women to sleep with boys because typically when a man sleeps with an underage girl, it's got a power/domination reason behind it. Women, in most cases don't have that.

While I don't think they are even close to being equal, american society has made the determination that a young man should be as sexual as he can be. This means, it is OK for him to sleep with an older woman, and it is OK for her to be seduced by a younger man. Also, supposedly it is harder on the female because 'her reputation will suffer'. I think it's a load of crap, personally. I also think it violates the Equal Protection clause of the US Constitution.

It's cultural stereotyping -- just the way people think.

According to the law, there is no difference.

But many people consider there to be a difference, based on history and cultural stereotypes -- so those find their way into the jury pool, and into the sentencing -- it's just part of human nature to be more tolerant of some offenses than others.
