So I'm pregnant, and this is my first child. I'm having my kid at home only because I feel a lot more comfortable with it. Plus I'm going to breastfeed and use cloth diapers. When I tell people, they get kinda harsh and talk to me like I'm some barbarian who's going to eat my offspring at birth. It's getting old, and I would like to hear from other women and get some support here. I mean, women have been birthing way before any type of medical intervention came about, and we've made it this far already right?

I'm with you on the breastfeeding part of it (though I was completely grossed out by the idea at first!) because it truly is the best source of nutrients for your baby. Not that parents who use formula are bad by any means - I was given formula and I think I turned out okay. :) Can't say as I'd go with the cloth diapers, but if I have to (if my baby is allergic to synthetic disposable) then of course I would. I think the home birth would be interesting - it's definitely a comfortable atmosphere - but for me, I would rather have my baby in a hospital/medical setting just because I don't want to associate my comfortable, cozy refuge with the pain of labor.

But no one should tell you what to do or that you're wrong. It's your body, it's your child, do what you need to or what you feel is right in order to have a good pregnancy, labor, and a healthy baby. That's all that matters. If people decide to tell you that you're wrong or nuts or whatever (or that you're going to eat your offspring...LOL!) just smile and say, "This works for me but thanks for your concern." End of story.

You could always invite them over for your next moonlit ritual or something - that would scare them off if nothing else...

Good Luck!

Good for you!! I respect your decisions. If you feel comfortable giving birth at home, by all means, do. I'm assuming a midwife or dr will be present? Breastfeeding is the best thing for your baby. If more people used cloth diapers we'd be better off. Think of how many diapers are sitting in landfills right now. Also using cloth diapers will save you about $2000 over the course of your child's diapered life.

Home birth was definently not something that I was comfortable with. I wanted as many medical personal close by as possible when I gave birth, but then again I was born without a heartbeat, so I realized the importants of good medical team being there.
As for the clothe diapers and breastfeeding, I think that's great. I wish that I had used clothe with my daughter, and I did breastfeed.

Yes, we have made it this far-but how many women used to die during labor due to complications? I had a totally normal pregnancy-no health problems (other than back pain which I had had prior) and had to be induced because my water broke and I never dialated. There's nothing wrong with choosing a home birth if it is right for you-however, after my first experience, it is DEFINITELY not something I am comfortable with for myself. My hospital had the option to use the birthing tub-which I wanted-but I couldn't. Cloth diapers are great if you're ambitious enough, and I encourage all women who can and are willing to to breastfeed. It is a wonderful, beautiful thing. I don't see any of these things as 'barbaric'-however-don't be totally shut off to the idea of being transported to a hospital. Complications may arise, and if you are totally against it, you may end up disappointed.

If its right for you then thats all that matters. Dont listen to anyone who is going to put down your decision, as long as you know that what you are doing isnt putting you or your baby at risk. If you do have a home birth, however, you should be close to a hospital because something might happen, and if you do need medical intervention because complications may arise you will at least be close to a place that can help you immediately. I wish you the best of luck, and a happy healthy pregnancy :)

to all the women who have chosen to have a heavily medical intvertion birth, feed formula, and use disposibles, you make them feel like they may have done something wrong, and then they get defensive.

I support you. I can't have a home birth, I have group B strep and have to have antibiotics durng delivery. But I use cloth and I breastfeeed. We also co sleep and baby wear!!! YAY OLD SCHOOL!!!!

You are the expert on you. Here's the interesting thing on other people's opinions - they're usually worth what you paid for them.
