Hiya.I've just changed over to BT Total broadband option 3 & i couldn't be happier.I've got the Norton Security package as part of the deal - it has anti-virus, antispyware & the firewall all included.I'm also running the latest version of Ad-aware.
I had Spybot S&D & Superantispyware running as well but the BT guy who installed my broadband uninstalled these 2.Apparently Norton running with these can cause conflict & aren't needed.
My Q is - is this enough protection online that will allow online, shopping, surfing etc safely? Or do i need other security software downloaded to add to this? If so can you recommend something suitable to a newbie? Many thanks Jackie.

If you have Norotn Online Security. (should include Virus Protector, Firewall, Spam Blocker, etc.) and Ad-Aware you should be fine. But when online shopping, check the website. Look for the https://. Thats httpS:// make sure the S is there in the http://

S makes sure that the website is secured and encrypted. Anything typed there will be gibrish when someone tries to look at it. Also make sure your firewall is on highest setting that also allows internet access

I suggest that the upper limit for contributions be done away with, and that the maximum payouts in retirement still remain as they are, adjusted for inflation. Social security is not a "give away" program but one that we all contribute to like a savings plan, and should be protected from other uses by the government. Do you agree or disagree and why? If you are so worried about it then why don't you; first put it back into the private sector and make to were no can take out money from it for their own interest, second pay back every penny you have borrowed from both Social Security and Medicare, third take the illegal immigrants off of it and those who come over here but never paid a penny to it, and lastly have it the same for everyone; in other words government officials are to participate in it and if they want something more they do it on their own without the tax payers funding it?Yet, the monetary stytem feeding the imbalances had never been really changed. They, a group of scholars, suggested that all interest rates would be 3% or less for everyone to become rich if desired (that must be true also to taces). The best economic situation would be, they said, when there were no interest rates. Why not try this solution? The rich would still be rich. My question is: when soial security becomes a problem connected to federal debts, why not work with a balanced or gain budget and spend no more than comes in, as any family has to strive for? Why not ban all loobying gifts in order to get laws that serve the country? God bless America.

Well it depends on how you surf the web mainly. I can browse the internet for a year without an antivirus or any sort of protection and I won't get any virus/spyware or anything like it. The key here is to watch out were you click, what sites you go to, what you download and you won't need that much protection that in the end will slow your computer down.

Norton Internet Security + Ad-Aware seems enough to any average person but it isn't 100% bulletproff. There are new viruses every day, new type of spywares, and other malicious stuff out there. To reduce your chances of getting this stuff, you will have to keep your stuff updated and not click/go to obvious sites that might infect you (ex. cheap porn sites)

In my opinion, Norton is too heavyweight for me. It uses to many resources and it's kind of overrated by people. I prefer simple, straightforward stuff that works. My top pick is NOD 32. Updates almost daily and instantly and it won't use almost any of your valuable resources.

Edit - Since you do a lot of online shopping and you have to deal with credit card numbers and that sort of stuff, be always careful where you buy. Look for signs in the website suchs as hackersafe, trust.e, etc. You can always look for reviews on that site. A good site for reviews is http://www.bizrate.com.

Also, keep everything updated. Not only your protection software but your operating system and other applications too. This, along with decent protection and good internet browsing habits will keep your computer safe and virus/spyware free.

You are just fine with Norton from BT. I've got the same package.

The Norton Protection Centre you get from BT is EXACTLY the same as that you can buy of Symantec.

I used to run the one from Symantec, but why pay for something again that's already included in the Broadband option.

No.

Spybot S&D and SuperAntispyware, although not "required", are still good to have. If they have problems with Norton you are better off getting rid of Norton.
Replace it, if you must, with a good firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Comodo, Sygate) (search for them) and a good antivirus (Avira Antivir is the best I have tried).

However I don't think you need to uninstall Norton. Spybot and Superantispyware should work well.

And most important of all: DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER.
Get Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Firefox itself will protect you from a lot of malware. Just by using it instead of IE you'll increase your safe surfing in 10000%.

Pretty good advises overall, and plenty of choices.
One thing though:
GET RID OF NORTON!
It consumes most of your ressources.
It is NOT efficient and misses a lot.
It COSTS a lot in renewals.
I think I have removed over 30 copies in the last 5 years...

Sounds like you are pretty well set, but you could add ccleaner to clean up your registry and delete unnecessary files if you are going to do all that surfing and just be careful what files you allow ccleaner to delete. Also make sure you change your settings to medium and high in Internet options. Safe surfing!

I guess so, but you do need to make sure that you keep your Norton virus and Adware definition files up to date.
