What is a Veteran?
A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of up to
and including their life. And there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand that.

Are you one of these people who don't understand, or just don't care?

I certainly do. I had the very great honor to meet and invite Sonnie Bill Mottern to speak at an NAPM function immediately after 9/11.
Sonnie is the former commander of American Ex-Prisoners of War.
And Sonnie never cared whether I was a Liberal or a Conservative. Being an American was all he cared to know.
And you know...like most veterans I know...he never acted like another American owed him anything.

Yes, that's what a veteran is.
And that has two important points to it. First, that blank check was given in service, and with the understanding that the govt and the elected leaders would not commit fraud or waste that soldier's efforts on pointless endeavors and fatal blunders. Those who died or were wounded for nothing were swindled.
Second, the goal of those veterans was to defend the country, and the oath they swore was to support and defend the Constitution. And most liberals do the same time. So do many conservatives. But politicians and some other individuals on both sides also betray that duty, and that trust -- and those are the "enemies, foreign and domestic" that every soldier has sworn to oppose.
There are many of us who have sworn to defend the constitution -- maybe not with our physical lives, but at least with our livelihoods. And none of us take it well when our leaders betray that trust.

My grandfather is a veteran and considers himself a liberal.
After fighting for his country he can now see that the Bush administration doesn't give a crap about veterans or the lives of US soldiers.
Why can't you see this?
If you want to call someone a liberal because they don't believe in unjust war, that's fine. But get a clue about what you are talking about.
You think we should risk our lives for an illegal war?
It takes more courage to stand up and say your government is wrong and demand change.

Yes, and what's your point..isn't it sad that a person signs up to make a good living, get free education and learn a skill and oh migod, he may have to fight for is pay..well, Luigi on the construction site too endangers himself, the fireman, the coast guard, the taxi driver, the courier...they all risk their life and in most cases the job is not as lucrative for them and their surviving families should they be killed...if there was no war, then they have an amazing and rewarding life monetarily with little or no risk...Police were not mentioned as they too are overstated.

Speaking as a Veteran I think most decent liberals do appreciate the Veterans and our soldiers and sailors in harm's way. They should, after all it is their sacrifices that give them their freedoms. I also think there is a far-left element that either despise anything authoritarian, or military just because they are cowards.

Yup, too bad they don't get a little bit of return on that check when they come home without legs, and suffering from PTS syndrome.
Brandy B, you don't have to be a coward to despise authoritarian attitudes, after all, Hitler was an authoritarian, and look where it got the people trusting him.

Well, my father, who is probably more liberal than I am, is a Vietnam Vet. My brother is currently serving and we have had a member of our family fight in every major military involvement in US history dating to the French and Indian War. So yes, I know what a veteran is.

I understand that the price they paid was way to high and they were democrats. The Army isn't all Republicans.
In fact it is a majority of Democrats.
I guess you think if you tell this enough times people will believe you.
Liberals did not start this war and they are not continueing it.
But a lot of them are fighting over there. So yes they do care.

If the country needed the check I might care. But the war in Iraq is the US using the blank check to go play craps in an alley. I respect putting your life on the line for something meaningful, not just putting your life on the line. I feel sorry for Veterans of meaningless wars.
