You need a passport.
So long as you do not stay more than 90 days in any one country you will not need a visa.
If you intend to stay in one place longer than 90 days you will probably need to obtain a long stay visa for that country.

Of course you will need a passport.
Europe is a whole continent with many souvereign states! For the Schengen countries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement and the UK you don't need a visa as a tourist (max. stay is 90 days); for other countries better look at the official web sites of their foreign offices. For e.g. Russia you will still need a visa.
Besides your passport and maybe a visa you don't really need anything special, although a knowledge of foreign languages might often be an advantage.

I'd bring your passport (because you're not going to Europe without it) and drivers license just in case. Other than that I don't think you need any other form of ID. Have fun

You can check on this website for each individual country, to see if you need visa and so on:
http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/index.jsp
And get a good guidebook, like Lonely planet, to read about the countries you want to go.
The also tell you what other things are important to bring. (If not needed as in you will not be allowed to travel without.)

The "land of the free" no longer allows its citizens to leave without government stamped paperwork. You must have a passport which involves alot of rules (clearing debts, outstanding warrants, not on the government watch lists). Its a pain to do and the waiting list is years long now that they changed the rules to make EVERYONE have to have one.
