window is side to side open, just got window a/c unit, will it fit?

i finally got a window a/c small one, but all my windows open side to side, not up and down, can I still use it? there will be gap above with open space, but can't afford portable ones, have portable swamp cooler, but too humid here in san diego. I'm soo hot, was so happy to get a/c now I don't know if I can use it at all. please help

sounds like you need a casement AC or remove the window, put in the ac and cover the remaining gap with plywood.
