I think of three main things that pervade all of biology. 1. Cell theory, which states that all living things are made of cells and all cells come from other cells. 2. Gene theory, which states that genes are the primary mode of inheritance. 3. The theory of evolution by natural selection. These are just a few though, there are more.

The Central Dogma of biology is this: One Gene -> one messenger RNA -> one protein.
Unfortunately, the latest genomic research is showing this dogma to be too simplistic. However, I am sure most basic biology books still preach it.
