That's why they are called "Chicken-hawks".
Also called "Chair-borne Rangers".
It has always been so.
Lincoln was the last president to go to the front lines during battle and put himself in the same danger as the troops. In fact a man standing within touching distance was shot. Of course he wanted to avoid war.
I don't recall any other sitting president going to the front. When they go into a war zone they always stay well in the rear, away from any action.
Many have been in combat prior to being elected, because every generation get a couple of wars.

Do you realize just how many political leaders, past and present, have served in the armed forces? You're kidding right? Don't tell John McCain that. He got the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam. Are you saying he wasn't willing to go to war or are you saying he is not a leader? You many want to rethink your question or do a little research before you generalize and try to dishonor their service.

The same reason you use your pawns first in chess instead of your king and queen. There are more of them, and in the minds of the people giving the orders, they are worth less, but they support their heroism as long as it doesn't bring harm to the king and queen.
If the people giving the orders to go to war actually had to go, there would only be defensive conflicts.

If you are referring to the leaders that called for this war, it would have cleaned out about 90% of the congress that voted for it. It really has nothing to do with guts though. If they are going to call for war, then they need to stay out of it and let the generals and field commanders take care of business. That includes keeping the damn media out of it also.

Why do people who call for better education not have the guts to go teach themselves?
Why do the people who call for better garbage pick-up not have th guts to go pick up garbage themselves?
Why do the people who call for an end to homelessness not have the guts to give a home to a homeless person themselves?
And finally, why do people like you make logically fallacious ad hominem attacks on others, and think you're making a brilliant argument?
These and other mysteries, I have no explanations for.

And so we all decide a particular war is needed and all agree we should go so we all then gear up and go and what are you going to do about those out on the battlefield with a wheelchair or walker? Or that mother 8 mo. pg. and who is going to stay back and take care of buisness on the home front? See how dumb your question is?

How quickly people forget George Bush called for the invasion of Iraq yet didn't fight in Vietnam. Instead, he joined the National Guard (which, during Vietnam, was a way out of going there) and got an early release.

but to answer your question wars are always fought for power
leaders have power and want more
one of the powers leaders have is to tell someone else to do their dirty work
as for people in general -- there is alot of money and jobs that is created by destroying things and having to rebuild afterward

Back in olden times, they used to. In fact, they were often some of the most dangerous units on the field, because many became leaders based on their military ability.
