I would go for a cute chewy book (the ones that make sure babies can't destroy them lol) and a toy car or digger or something, my little brother loves them, and they're not too noisy and annoying for anyone else in the house :P

Hope I can give you a few ideas: My son is 17 months and loves books. Especially books with dogs, babies, bright colors, animals, or trucks. You can't lose with books. When he turned one, his favorite toys were things he could push. He was already walking, and when they first start walking, they LOVE pushing things. He has a little shopping cart, a lawn mower, a truck to push, stuff like that. He also loved musical toys when he turned one. Anything that plays music is still a hit with him. And if the music isn't too annoying, it's a hit with me, too! As for clothes, I wish more people had gotten him 18 month stuff for over the summer. He was one in February, and a lot of people got him wither clothes. That sort of left us high and dry when warm weather rolled around. As for more practical stuff, my son started eating more and more table food around one year old, so baby spoons and forks, bowls, etc. are a good idea, too.

A little push toy (lawn mower or 'popper') would be great. It encourages him to take steps, yet he has something to hold onto and help keep balance as he is pushing the toy. Kids love that at that age!

i would buy him baby clothes, a blanket, little stuff animals, or toys. The blankies at sears are under $20. I'd just go into sears, JCPenny, Babies R Us..and browse around the kids section.

Either clothes, baby books, or some toys. You want to give him something that will develop his skills.
