If a Chinese speaking foreigner spends 1 hour a day learning English, how long, you think, does it take him or her to learn to understand 14,000 English words?

I stick to my estimate in the other question for the same reasons. 7 to 9 years everyday for full comprehension. Many people who got through the public school system would probably still not be able to read a paper.
See George Bush for example.

Sorry I couldnt resist!

Does the amount of time it takes to learn Chinese or English words, or how many words it takes to read a Chinese/English newspaper really have anything to do with Taiwan? This is a question for the (Society & Culture) Langauges category.

First, come to a decision whether or not you desire to be trained British, American, or Australian English. There are principal variations. But they're all similarly comprehensible (you'll be able to talk to an American with a British accessory, for vice versa). I advocate finding out American English, on the grounds that Americans talk extra obviously and certainly not drop their R's. Then, pay attention to pronunciations. There is Pronunciationbook on YouTube to coach you the way, or you'll be able to use a dictionary. There are a few phrases that may be reported multiple means (like "quite often" or "both") and be similarly right. There also are a few phrases which might be written the identical however have extraordinary, however quite often identical, meanings (separate, for instance). Then you have to be trained the best way to "combo" phrases". Foreigners have a tendency to supply phrases their complete pronunciation, and depart pauses in among the phrases. That will sound unnatural, like you're enunciating. Words combo in combination and might difference their pronunciation generally. The "T" in "Metal" and "it's what it's" is quite often reported extra like a "D". It is principal to be trained the English R sound. This is like an L, however curl your tongue again a little. It must now not contact the roof of the mouth. This is on the grounds that the "Rolled R" may also be stressed with a "D" or "T". Also, be trained the "Th" sounds. There are 2 models of 'Th', each reported making use of the identical tongue function. Don't be afraid to stay your tongue out a little for Th. You ought to! It could also be impolite in a few cultures, however now not so in ours. Try speaking to a few English audio system. Maybe take a go back and forth to America, UK, Australia, or an additional English-talking position. I went to Mexico for every week and I spotted an advantage in my talking potential for Spanish.

well i figured that you could at most do 70 words a day and
then: 14000/70= 200 (200 days)
BUT

that is never really necessary! what you need to do is get a good acquaintance with english GRAMMAR and PHRASES!

just studying words is not necessarily at all what you need, most english/ american people you meet on the street don't even know that many words.

think about it.
