Also, will my fry have trouble swimming in a tank that has an under-gravel filter?

Yep, they work great because they don't have an intake that can suck up your guppy fry. Use valves to regulate the are flow through the air diffusers and your good to go.

Yes it's safe for fry. I had a 20 gallon tank set up for guppies with just an undergravel filter so I could keep duckweed in the tank (this keeps getting sucked into regular filters, so an undergravel is needed to grow this). The type I had had two uplift tubes, one at each side, and I kept bunches of artificial plants in the back half as a place for the fry to hide. I never had problems with the set-up, and with the plants, I never had to use a breeder net.

The advantage of an undergravel filter is that the water is pulled down through the gravel (a bonus of added biological filtration), rather than up through the tube and through the impeller which could kill fry if they get sucked in. Just keep the gravel small enough that the fry can't swim down between the individual pieces and get trapped. The overall current is less as well, so males with long fins don't have as much difficulty swimming.

That is an undergravel filter. They offer many advantages in tanks with fry becuase it is very dificult for them to get sucked into it, compaired to a conventional hand on back or canister filter.

As a side note breeding nets are not good to raise fry in due to the fact that the nets get clogged quickly makeing for poor water conditions in the net. I prefer to use a 10gal tank for fry - $10 at walmart and can house 100's of fry.

If you already have a filter, you can place a sponge over the intake to prevent fry from getting into it. This method also gives the fry food in between feedings from the small particles trapped on it.

Feel free to email me as i raise many guppies to feed my other fish.

a school of small tetras or rasboras can stay in a 10 gallon they're cut back priced. Betas love 10 gallons they supply the effect of being a sprint greater suitable extreme priced. Pygmy cories are yet yet another mid-fee otion. There are some greater suitable extreme priced fish like clean gouramis that would desire to stay in a 10. i'd desire to do weekly water transformations and siphoning fairly of an entire water replace. truthfully take some water to the petstore so as that they are able to confirm it previously you located new fish indoors the tank. Goldfish do now not stay very long in a 10 by using certainty they produce too lots waste which pollutes the water so your water extreme high quality is probable exceedingly detrimental on the 2nd. With some water transformations it is going to bolster. You do want an airstone. each and all the fish i discussed have been tropical and that i generally save them at approximately seventy 8. fee and internet site are going to anticipate the placement you're.

I used to raise them as a hobby back in the 70`s .
Not a professional mind you . Just enjoyed them ,
I liked the fancy tail guppy,s .
I used the under gravel filter and would separate the mother in a small net in one corner of the aquarium near the top .
After she had the baby,s I would put her back in to the general population and keep the baby,s in the net until they got bigger.
I would all so trade them for supplies at my local pet store .
It was a win win deal for both of us . Enjoy .
