My parents have given me a choice which to play---and i love both. And my friends say that both would suit me, because half of my personality is rocker chick, and the other is civilized and passionate. So...what are your suggestions?

I play and teach both instruments, and I think that starting off with piano would do best for you.

I base this on the fact that playing piano will unavoidably teach you music theory that would be phenomenally helpful should you decide to pick up guitar somewhere along the line.

Same goes for other instruments you might decide to try, such as violin, cello, or bass.

So that's my opinion. I hope your choice makes you happy in all that you choose to do.

Piano is a much more versatile instrument and has much more music written for it than guitar. As a pianist you can equally well play keyboards if you are into rock, you can move into jazz, classical and even orchestral conducting if you have the motivation to develop your musical talents. Andre Previn is an example of a musician who did just this during his career. Composed music too.

I taught myself how to play piano by myself. Just learning the keys is very easy, but than you need to learn how to read music, or even play by ear, but doing all the chords once you get there is hard. I wouldn't know about guitar...
