I am a new mommy. Proud mother of a preemie. She will be 6 months on the 10th of Sept. I would like to start her on Gerber baby foods stage one, like applesauce, peas, sweet potatoes, etc..I have heard that I am suppose ot start w/yellow veggies first? Can anyone tell me, is there truth to this? And if not, what should i give her first, and how do I prepare it?

I don't know for sure what you are SUPPOSE to start them with. Mine started with fruits (bananas first, then she loved the sweet potatoes but that was the only veggie, and then all the other fruits). She hated the other vegetables at first (NOT b/c I started with the sweet stuff; we tried the veggies first- she refused them and made this cute disgusted face, lol). She ate them more about 2 months later though. I don't see why there would be a problem with it. My baby girl is healthy as ever:) As for preparation, I fed her right from the jar if it was kept at room temp, because I was a little nervous about heating it up.

we started my nephew on gerber at 7 months and the dr told use we can start with what ever one we wanted but do the same fruit or veggie for 2 weeks before introducing another one.

Here is what we did in the morning we gave my nephew banana's and for lunch he had carrots. At nap time he had a 6oz bottle. and for dinner he had the carrots and banana's with a 6oz bottle half an hour before bed.

Congratulations! Never heard about yellow veggies. Most moms start with veggies because fruit is sweet and they want to encourage them first to eat veggies because if they start with fruit, they may reject the veggie. Don't know the truth of this, but that is what 'they' say.

Get yourself a food blender or a hand held blender.

I used to give my babies:

Potato - normal or sweet - mash it up with some milk, butter and add boiled water to thin it down a bit.
Liquidise meats, white fish and any kind of veg.
Cook fruits through a little then liquidise - avoid fruit with pips in.
Yoghurts
Make up a cheese sauce - homemade if possible and pour over mashed potato.
Cereals
Porridge

Don't give anything with nuts in or honey (it can contain a type of bacteria).
Don't give spicy foods either.
Avoid salty foods.

I used to just blend down normal family meals and give those. As long as there's no bits in and the food is smooth, then you should be okay.

Don't stress about what order to give foods in - just experiment with what your baby likes. Give small amounts so as not to overload the system or they can get diarrhoea.

I am not sure about the color, but I do know that most babies who were fed fruits first did not like the veggies. So, your best bet is to start on veggies.

It doesn't matter what color first.

Just don't feed her any fruit yet. Otherwise she'll get hooked on that because it's so sweet and refuse to eat the vegetables.

As for preparing.. you really don't have to. Just right out of the package.

I didn't use store bought baby foods. Can't be sure of the ingredients and preservatives and other crap they add. I used fresh fruits, vegetables even meat and used my food processor to puree it. Much healthier and I knew every ingredient that went into the food I fed her.
