My theory, and it's only a guess, to a small extent is that burning candles release particles (soot?) that cling to dust and weigh down the dust so that it settles out of the air... which means more cleaning in the long run... lol.

I have been selling candles for a year now and have never heard of candles absorbing dust in the air. You might check out www.candles.org. That's the National Candle Association website and they usually have answers to all kinds of candle questions.
