i dont think elvis wrote his own music...some of it was preformed by other singer/songwriters first...like i know blue suede shoes was a carl perkins song...and hound-dog was by a blues artist named big momma thornton for examples....but he could preform the it better than anyone else out there!

and even when you see a song with name on it (Love me Tender for example) it was put there only as a monetary benefit, to earn royalties. like the other poster said, back then, it was not required as part of a singer's career to write songs. that was left up to the 'experts.' just singing well and uniquely was greatly accepted as the norm.

i think the songs he covered really stamped his style, and introduced 'white' radio listeners to listen to other music out there. elvis respected so many different kinds of music and singers and songwriters.

where elvis made a huge effect was in gospel music. his arrangements or you could even say 'production' changed those songs into something beyond the average gospel singing. no wonder he was nominated for 4 grammys in gospel and won 3! he did not get an award in any popular music category.

one more thing, i loved to study who elvis' songwriters were. they were fasinating and talented people.

In his era, it was common for artists and groups not to write their own material. Instead, they typically performed songs written by professional songwriters. That's why in those days, it was not at all unusual to have two or three competing versions of the same song but by different artists on the charts at the same time.

no he did not. he was just the first one to get certain songs played on mainstream radio.
