So, when we bought our house, it was seeded and we has some nice bermuda in the backyard. Then we got dogs....*sigh*... long story short our yard went completely bare. We started keeping the dogs indoors all day, we tried reseeding, sod, just about everything and had given up short of calling a landscaper. Then, after a few months we noticed there was something green growing in the backyard. It was crabgrass. Now I know it's not something beautiful to look at and it won't make a golf course yard, but if it will grow there....it has to be better than nothing right?
As a special note, we live in the south, it's 100+ degrees here right now, and our front yard is fine...no weeds, nice bermuda growing there without problem. I'll admit that my husband and I both are far from yard experts. Is having a backyard yard of crabgrass that bad?

I think I love YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a landscaper, I kill myself 12 to 14 hours a day to perfect other peoples yards.
When I come home to my , Female collie, female German Shepherd, and my Female Basset Hound!
I also mow my CRABGRASS LAWN, it is annual so my yard looks like Heck in New England in the Winter.
My lawn is the greenest and hardiest drought / PEE/ PLAY resistant grass in the summer!
So, the original
question is...... Is crabgrass that bad?
Oh, For shame! Beat both of you, How embarrassing for you and your neighbors!
Yes it is considered BAD, Awful, But in New England, Bermuda Grass is considered an Invasive Weed, SO Go Figure??????????
Do you like it???
Then it is NOT a weed!!!!!!!!!!

The seeds of the crabgrass will spread, and the nice front, and most neighbors yards will be a crabgrass mess before too long. They won't be happy. But if they already have it, they gave it to you. Visit the neighbors ask for ideas, and a garden store.
Try plugs of St. Augustine grass.. Some folks don't like that, but it does not produce seed, only runners.

Crabgrass is not a problem- unless you want anything else to grow. It tends to be extremely invasive and will choke out the roots of any other vegetation eradicating it from the area in which it grows. If you do not intend on growing other grasses or plants in the general area, than the crabgrass will not harm your yard. If anything, it will help minimize the dust the dogs kick up when they play outside. lol
Good luck and stay cool!

There is also goose grass, very similar to crab grass. No significant difference for control or value. The worst thing about them is the frequency of mowing needed, and the patchiness of growth if you care about a "neat "yard. Both are annuals, so if you desire a lawn of annual grasses, you must let them go to seed, or re plant.. Not a major problem, there are always low lying seed heads under the mower.
I have a yard, not a "lawn" so it is not a major issue for me. Still an early spring application of an herbicide that prevents seeds from germinating, and maybe one more about June, can stop it in your yard if you object to it's appearance. Unless the entire neighbor hood is using control, it will always be back. Not a bad thing, at least there is something.

If you are happy with it, then that's all that counts! I think it is NEAT to just except it instead of fighting it. And hey it is your backyard so the neighbors can't complain as long as your keeping the front yard maintained. GoOD LuCk!

Good question! Crab grass is ok with me as something green in the yard when everything else is too dry. I think we tend to obsess about perfect grass and use up too much water and environmentally unfriendly fertilizers trying to grow something that apparently doesn't want to grow there.

You've got my two thumbs up. I HATE GRASS, it is a total waste of precious resources not to mention a waste of my time. Any green is good, and crab and quack grass are green. I would much rather spend my time and money on flower beds and ponds. Lawns are so boring. RScott
