Adam T is so right, a very wise answer, to be truly happy you have to learn to be yourself and play the cards your given in lifes lottery.
To be truly happy is to face lifes worrys and misfortunes with a shrug of the shoulders and know there are more good things in life, and to do that which you enjoy.

A thankful heart and appreciation for all that you have. When you give to others less fortunate than yourself. A smile for those who are down hearted and a word of comfort for those suffering from misfortune. When you truly assess the bounties we have in our everyday life we should realise that we are truly happy. There is always someone less fortunate than yourself.True happiness lies in being content with what you have and having a thankful heart.

Define happiness? For only when you define what it is and what you need for you to be happy, and pursue it, shall you find the answer.

Anf if you ask me, "but what is the answer if you pursue to never find what you look for?"

Then I will reply, "it is not the destination because when you reach there, mankind is forever wanting to move forward or want more."

It is the journey, that makes you happy. But people are not happy because they are not happy with the destination and so they are not happy with their journey.

They are scared for the journey to end or to reach their destination.

Hence, to be happy - KNOW your purpose. Live your Purpose and no matter where it will take you or what you may face - enjoy the journey it will take you on.

Hence, that purpose is different for everyone. Everyone values totally different to the next person - so we can never really define happiness as one thing. It can only be defined as this:

Do what you love doing and pursue its vision and enjoy the journey. That means, enjoy the challenges too as wisdoms, lessons, and enjoy the victories too as faces of what you love in every human being.

It takes to be true to yourself. The greatest challenge for every human being is to be true to themselves.

Drop the desire to be happy.
Or live in present.
Happiness is nowhere or now here.
Living in past or future illusion makes unhappy feeling.
Let it all go. Be here now. Give up the struggle to be happy, be someone special be somewhere different.../

I really believe that it takes the desire to be a good person with moral/ethical codes and intelligence, warmth, and kindness to be happy. The variations from this point arise from adding on activities of interest, may it be attending operas, music events, eating good foods, and other pleasurable activities that hurt no one.

While one is engaging in life, one is also reaching personal milestones (goals set by oneself) to satify the need for competence and industry.

To feel true happiness, you have to of had suffered at some time in your life. A person who has never pained or felt sorrow can never understand what it is to be happy, for they have no proper contrast or comparison.

Happiness is about choosing to be happy. Of course if you have nothing, it may be harder to appreciate happiness (I don't subscribe to the 'poor but happy' school of thought!) but you can have plenty of money and all that it can buy as well as the adoration of fans worldwide and still be unhappy; I'm thinking Robbie Williams here obviously!

When you realise that material possesions do not make you happy. When you can lose the attachment to material goods and people and accept what happens is the world as being out of your control, then you can be happy.

Learn to appreciate what you have, who you are with while you can. You may not have it tomorrow and then you will have nothing.
