It can be argued that humans are in fact a type of biological machine with many quantifiable mechanical processes and traits. Bones, sinew and muscle work together to perform work just as machines have various parts operating in tandem to perform work. Both mechanisms follow behavior inherent in their design, and operate in certain predetermined ways. A man, designed by nature to walk can not fly, nor can a car, designed to roll may not fly.

On a metaphysical level, a machine or robot (a word invented by a Czech playwrite which means 'forced labor' or 'serf') is incapable of rising above it's programming or design. The quest to better one's self is one of the defining characteristics of humanity. Though a machine may be made 'aware' of its surrounding with various sensory equipment, it can not be said to be 'self aware.'
