In ALMOST every case... I prefer the studio version. But there are a great deal of songs that are recorded live that are incredible... I just would have rather been there in person....

Great question.

There are very few live versions that I would pick over the studio version. This is because the live version differs too much from what I'm familiar with. The guitar solo in live versions doesn't have quite the same feel or impact.

There are of course instances where the live version manages to capture a band at it's peak performance. The first time I saw Kiss perform "Deuce" and "Black Diamond" were awesome, I have yet to hear another version live or studio that compares.

Depends on the song. There's a U2 song called "11 O' Clock Tick Tock" from back in the day. The live version is much better than the studio version.

Usually the studio version, but I prefer Bob Seger's live versions of Mainstreet and Hollywood Nights. I love the Eagles' live version of Hotel California and Lynyrd Skynyrd's live version of Free Bird, but the studio version is just as good.

Usually, I would prefer to hear the studio version, because it is tailor made to sound how the artist wants to present his song to you, however, in my opinion there are many bands that make fine albums, but their live shows just don't live up to the albums. For this reason, I do like to buy or at least listen to "recorded live" cd's. That's how you can really find out if they're worth their weight in salt. Not to take anything away from a "studio band", but for me personally, I love that live, hard-drinkin, hard-rockin, hometown heroes bar band sound.

It depends on the band /artist, and which song it is.

For the most part, I prefer studio versions.

But these are some exceptions:

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven; Rock and Roll {both Live 1972}

Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon {live 1980}; The Chain {live 1982}; Come {live 2003}

Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen {live 1980 & 1987}

I like the studio & live of this one equally:

Sarah McLachlan - Possession

I actually prefer live versions. If not there seeing the artist, at least you can hear it. And when you hear the cheers from the audience, you would usually listen closely to why. And you would visualize the magic that was happening on stage.

But it's nice to have the studio version as well.
