No, an ultrasound is not necessary and many women's insurance plans don't cover them anyway, except for medical necessity (which doesn't apply to most expectant mothers).
I never get them routinely and I'm pregnant with my 4th baby now. My insurance doesn't cover ultrasounds, so my husband and I would have to pay $400 out-of-pocket for an unneccesary procedure. I had an ultrasound only ONCE because I was in a rollover car accident and they could not hear the heartbeat on dopplar so they did the ultrasound to check on the baby (she was ok).
However, there ARE good reasons to get an ultrasound:
1. Medical reason (i.e. suspected problem or complication)
2. Need to establish the gestational age of the fetus (i.e. if mom has NO idea when she conceived)
3. To routinely check on babies or moms with known conditions (like placenta previa, breech, etc.)

Necessary to make sure the baby's anatomy is correct. There are some babies that are born with problems, one kidney, problems with placement of organs, things like that. Usually you get one ultrasound at 20 weeks and this tells the well-being of the baby. If anything is detected they may do follow up ultrasounds. Ultrasounds do not hurt, and are a fun way to bond with your baby.

No. You can refuse anything. I know many people who don't get any ultrasounds at all. There is a lot of research showing ultrasound causes cells to mutate and can be dangerous so at least look into it before you decide. I choose to get ultrasound, but I completely understand why people don't.

It think it depends. I mean if you are 100% sure that you conceived on a certain date, no question. Then there is no reason to have an US to determine the due date, but they usually check at some point to make sure the baby is growing at a normal rate, size length etc. The amount of amniotic fluid etc etc. I would say it's neccessary, but i am not yours or anyones doctor. I would ask your doc if it is and if they say it is ask why.
To me personally it was exciting and a reliefe to see my baby moving around and see her head and brain and other body parts all in tact.

Depending on your age, your doctor normally will order just ONE sonogram. This is to confirm the number of weeks pregnant as well as to see if there are any noticeable abnormalities.

You don't have to get them if you don't want to get them.
