Feelings convey information about situations, on both conscious and subconscious levels, via at least 30 neurochemicals acting alone or in concert in complex ways.

If we were not such complex creatures, we would not have them. Robots do not have feelings. Cars do not have feelings. Plants to not have feelings. The higher up on the food chain you are, the more complex your genetic makeup will be. It is elementary!
