I am starting a teen magazine with some of my friends. It is going to have the fashion and beauty and all of that, but I want to put a lot of emphasis on art, music, books, and other creative or intellectual topics. I also plan to have a lot about health and the environment. I would love to have some ideas for articles. What would you want to read about in a magazine? What are some bands maybe that you would like 2 see reviewed? Health questions you may have? Anything at all that would interest you, please tell me!!!

p.s there will also be a website with all of the articles, so leave your email if u want me 2 contact you with the website when it gets published.

As a point of information - who will be giving this advice on health issues?? Have you ever heard of liability issues? The information you print cannot just be the opinions of some teenaged kids. You are discussing people's health here, and if your information is inaccurate or downright incorrect, you can be sued should someone claim they took your advice and their health suffered from it. Do you intend to have some kind of a medical expert on your staff? I have no problem with you reviewing bands and talking about teen books and authors, but if people have health questions, what makes you the ones they should go to for information? I understand that young kids get afraid to discuss issues such as STD's and their reproductive organs with a doctor and tend to come to forums to ask questions. But that is anonymous. If they get false information and they risk their lives because of it, they have no clue who they got the information from. But you are putting your name on a magazine. There are liability issues involved and liability insurance to carry.

And whole we're on the subject, there are also slander and liable issues to be considered. Have you discussed any of this with an attorney? You really should before you make any plans. You will need one. Pax - C

What fun this will be and a great challenge, too. Your idea reminds me of Foxfire, a magazine put out by the students of a school. It became nationally known.

Foxfire zeroed in on the folks who lived in the area, interviewing elderly people and people with interesting jobs. They included photographs with the stories. They studied the history of their area and printed stories about it, the first settlers, the type of people, the young people who fought in various wars.

You might even want to include "Teen of the Week" or month, or whatever! Select a student from your school and highlight his or her life, the goals, the opinions, etc. Don't just select the Sports stars or the A students. Include the newcomers and the average folks.

I think Common Sense had some great advice. I have noticed on Answers that many young people are confused about sex.

You might consider a Classified Section for teens, where they could pick up things they want or need, like music tapes, books, computer parts, whatever.

An opinion person is always popular, you know where people write in and a certain person gives them advice. I think it would be a good idea to do a survey or poll. Mail out self addressed post cards and have on them "what do you want to read about??" It will not only generate publicity for your magazine, it will give you a good idea of where to start from......Good Luck

Do some sex education...too many kids are thinking oral sex is not sex, and is not dangerous, and ok to do. I'm talking middle school age. They call it hooking up. Kids are getting Venarial diseases that were nearly eradicated like gonnorhea, syphillus, and clamidia, not to mention the more recent things like HIV. Kids need to know this information, so they can make an informed decision, which is hopefully NO. Parents are not talking to their kids about sex so they learn from their friends, and what they are bombarded with everyday in magazines, tv commercials, music videos, etc...(sex sells) so they say. They need to know this is not a casual sort of thing, and it's very important to be educated.

Kids are not as dumb as we think they are, and keeping them in the dark is the stupidest thing we can do, so discussing these subjects in as age appropriate way as possible is essential for our kids in today's society.

Get in to subjects about the real world things kids have to deal with these days, like global warming, poverty, what happens with lack of education, and apathy. Try not to get sucked up in the fashion skinny, beautiful, inappropriately dressed for the age, kind of thing. Teen mags, often get carried away with hollywood hype, and therefore are miss-informed about the real world, and how to be successful. Did you know parents are paying for their 18 year old daughters to have breast implants??? They are not even fully developed yet for one, and it's so shallow...like telling your kid your not good enough to be successful the way you are, so you need big boobs, to get a good job, husband, etc... How rediculous is that?

Anyway, hopefully some food for thought. and good luck on the new magazine.

added due to response below this one: I did not mention that whatever info you decide to discuss in your magazine, please make sure you do research your facts. The sex ed facts I stated, were directly from the Montel Williams show, and I have read about this problem in other reliable sources. It's important for teenagers to get the facts from sources other than their friends, and the local fad factory.
