In my own experience (many years selling, repairing and maintaining computers), Avira Antivir has proven to be the best around. It has never let a virus trough, it stops viruses before they get into your PC and cause damage (something that Avast failed to do in two occasions I witnessed), is very low on resources, it doesn't slow down your PC.
You can use the free version for personal use, or purchase the premium version if you want the added protection.
The free version does not have an email scanner, but it still stops any mail viruses upon access.
The free version has a "notification" windows though, that will offer you the paid versions; but it's just a minor annoyance compared with the protection offered.
I am no longer recommending AVG, after I found a serious issue: if AVG is not updated for 3 days, it disables itself, leaving you completely unprotected and with a false sense of security. It's worst than not having an antivirus at all!
Cheers.

Kaspersky, F-secure, or AOL Active Virus shield hands down. Know why??? They all use Kaspersky's scanning engine which currently holds the best detection. Others will say Nod32 but if you aren't very experienced it won't work AND it actually hardly detects what Kaspersky will. If you read antivirus tests, Kaspersky and Kaspersky based scanners always rank as #1. Avg is ok for a newbie but go with Active Virus Shield since it's basically Kaspersky for free

They all have there up's and downs. I remember asking this question a while ago (not on here), and my final decision was NOD32 and I have never looked back. Doesn't take up much resources (Like good ole' Norton), loads fast and updates every day. I use it on all of my computers at home and had our company change over from Norton to NOD32 and they have no regrets. So all in all, I would recommend NOD32.........I know there are other programs out there to compare it to other than Norton, but just choose that since they are a big competitor.

AVG is by far the best, most efficient anti-virus product on the market today. I have used it extensively in my business (computer repairs), and can tell you that it catches things all other programs ignore!

only one sure fire way to avoid any viruses.
don't load any unclean software on your computer, and don't allow it on the internet.
there, my brother has a game machine that has been viruse free for 4 years with out any anti-virus programs -- gasp -- it is not on the net and he doesn't load stupid stuff on it..... or any stuff other than 'clean' new programs.
that being said, i like AVG it is free. but, i also use other stuff like McAfee and Norton's..... so it is really preference and price.

I have found McAfee to be the most user-friendly anti-virus program. It is also very effective in finding viruses, Trojans, ad-ware, etc. that other programs miss. I was lucky to have the whole system free with my cable Internet service.

theres no such thing as the 'best' av.
a good browser, coupled with quite a few good plugins and a little bit of common sense will help you a lot!
anywayz.. try out nod32 (touted as the 'best' ;) )
or avast / kaspersky
