Harlow, the former CIA spokesman, said in an interview yesterday that he testified last year before a grand jury about conversations he had with Novak at least three days before the column was published. He said he warned Novak, in the strongest terms he was permitted to use without revealing classified information, that Wilson's wife had not authorized the mission and that if he did write about it, her name should not be revealed.

Harlow said that after Novak's call, he checked Plame's status and confirmed that she was an undercover operative. He said he called Novak back to repeat that the story Novak had related to him was wrong and that Plame's name should not be used. But he did not tell Novak directly that she was undercover because that was classified.

Doesn't matter, her identitity was classified, as all other CIA operatives are. Just because she wasn't on an under-cover assignment, does not mean her identity as a CIA operative wasn't classified.
Leaking her real identity to press makes it impossible for her to work covertly, which is a threat to national security.

The CIA claims she was. Why every republican in the Bush administration decided to out her and all of the folks that worked at her cover I dont know. She is still regarded as a NOC by the CIA, thats why she cant tell all and put Andrew Card, Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, Richard Armitage, etc. into prison.

It has already come out in a previously classified CIA report submitted by the prosecutor during the sentencing phase that she was in fact a covert cia operative at the time that libby and rove were discussing her name with reporters. The CIA has admitted this publically Even the idiotic fox pundits have had to admit, to their embarassment, that she was a covert CIA operative at the time that bush's people were discussing her identity with reporters.
