I found a little house to fix up for rental. I hired the home inspector that my realtor recommended. He found a few things wrong, but nothing that would be too expensive to fix. I bought the house based on his report. Now I find that the problems are much more serious than he says in his report. Is it possible that he under reported the problems so that the realtor would make the sale?

Why would a seller have a home inspector for the property they are selling?

Not really some are just lazy and some don't know what to look for. It is possable he didn't report the large problems because he did not want to kill the deal for the realtor, Good realtors like good inspectors, bad realtors hate good inspectors. They call us deal killers and will not recommend us again. I have had realtors leave when I show up, because they know me and know I don't care about them and I just care about my client the buyer. When you are hiring a home inspector hire one who has worked in the trades not someone who just took an online course.

Anything is possible but most likely the inspector didnt lie. They generally dont have anything to gain from a favorable or an unfavorable inspection cause they are paid either way. Its a far stretch to think that the Realtor paid off the inspector. The most likely situation is that the inspector gave you best case scenarios because they didnt want to over estimate so they under estimated. You will need to have an inspector that will brutally honest with you next time so that you will know what you are getting yourself into.

only if you they dont know what they are doing, or if you are using the home inspector your seller is using. in any case, it is always best to get your own and tell him what your intentions are before buying the property.

Anything is of course possible. But it's probably more likely he's just incompetent, or didn't bother to do his job properly.
