In all cases you need to go to the doctor. Sometimes your body naturally removes the fetus like it's suppose to. However, sometimes it doesn't. In which case a d&c would need to be done. They will do blood work and possibly an ultrasound to make sure that a miscarriage has taken place. If they do a d&c you will be put to sleep while they do the procedure. Sometimes they will provide you with pain medicine for the cramps you will get after. They don't clean everything out during the d&c because it could possibly end up hurting your uterus. So your body still has to get rid of anything that's left. You will have a follow-up at your doctors office if you've passed it naturally or had a d&c and they will tell you to wait a while before you try to conceive again. **EDIT** I have had 4 d&c's in my life. They do their best to get most of the stuff out however if they clean TOO MUCH out it could result in a hole in your uterus which would make it difficult if not impossible to ever get pregnant again. (This is what doctor's have told me) They clean out most of it but when you are sent home your body will naturally pass out the rest which will be a small amount. They never kept me in the hospital long. I've only had to have one EMERGENCY d&c in which I still wasn't kept over-night. But different states/towns have different hospitals and hospital staff. In come places they may keep you over night and may do things a little differently. Ask your doctor, they will give you the best information about it all.
