Soap is made from mixing lye with fat has been around for centuries for cleaning. However, in hard water it leaves scum on the clothes and the washing machine. Detergents which are suffactants......which make "water wetter" by breaking down the molecular barrier between water and whatever it's trying to penetrate.......were introduced in 1940's for cleaning clothes. They were pretty much all the same until the 1960's when various additives were being put in: bleach, "whiteners", brighteners, softeners, etc. You can use detergents with one or more additives, but once in awhile go back to a basic detergent for awhile........to wash away additive buildup.
