Vacuum cleaner unless I am refering to the brand Hoover.
I liked telling people I hoovered my clothes after washing them, before I had an automatic, I used a Hoover spin drier.

If I'm talking about a vacuum, I say vacuum. If I'm talking about a carpet cleaner, I say carpet cleaner. Were you unaware that Hoover made anything other than vacuums?
