I have an old work shirt of my husbands that I am transforming into an art smock for my son. Currently the shirt is your basic button-up dress shirt. For ease of use, I would like to change the slit buttons to snaps. Is there an easy way to do this?

It's not all that easy, but I would try this. Use the sewing machine to zig zag over the buttonholes. Then put the snap fasteners in between so that they have fresh fabric to dig into. But if it is an old shirt, the fabric will be worn and snaps can be pretty hard on fabric; there's a lot of pulling on them. I would consider using velcro instead.
