As others have described, THEhotel is part of Mandalay Bay and in the south part of the "strip". Bellagio is "center strip" and across the street from Paris, Ballys, Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood (former Aladdin).
THEhotel is an "all suite" hotel, which means all the rooms have a separate bedroom and living area. They have nice flat screen TVs and large bathrooms. You have access to the famous "Mandalay beach" with it's wave pool, lazy river, and other in-hotel attractions like the Shark Reef, many fine restaurants and shops. But it is a fair walk to the other hotels and they have a short tram that travels from Luxor and Excaliber. You can also walk between the hotels in air conditioned comfort (they are all owned by the same company). The rooms are quiet, the separate entrance is far from the casino noise.
Bellagio is a beautiful hotel too. You will pay extra to have a lake view, but it is worth it. They have the music to the fountain show on the TV. They have a very nice pool area, but not as "family-oriented" as Mandalay Bay. Great to have a cool lunch by the pool here. Lots of great (read $$$) shops and some of the best gourmet restaurants in Las Vegas (Picasso). Much better buffet here than at MB. I like the quiet of the main casino here.
So if you want to go to a wave beach, (October is not that cold in LV yet) choose THEhotel. If you want to see the famous "strip" by walking and want to stay in opulence, stay at Bellagio.
BTW, if you are going to see a major show while in town, I'd choose the hotel where it is playing. "O" at Bellagio is great and you'll get better tix using the hotel concierge.

I like the Bellagio better. My family goes there all the time and I think that the rooms are a bit better, and the custome service is more complete. Also staying at THEhotel will make you have to walk more in that hot weather (yes, even in October) and no one wants to do that.

I think the Mandalay Bay has a younger crowd. Bellagio is nice. What about the new Wynn hotel?

THE Hotel gets my vote. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous and I liked being at the end of the strip at night since it is a little more quiet. Mandalay Bay has the best sports book in Vegas...loved it.

If you want to stay around the "ritzy, glitzy" more upscale area's of the strip, stay at the Bellagio. If you want to stay away from the congestion of the strip, and hang out around the "sleeper" casino/hotels (Luxor, Excalibur) then stay at THEhotel.

I like that THEHotel isn't a tourist destination - you don't get a steady stream of people who are staying elsewhere walking through the place.
