surely outer space is outside atmosphere of earth?

In terms of interplanetary travel I think the terms are pretty much interchangable.

I thought Outer Space was outside the solar system but apparantly was wrong.

It's really the same thing. The only reason why from time to time some people will "outer" space is because you can have space here on Earth. Like the "space" between your front door and you back door. Most of the time they are talking about the area of the universe above 100 kilometers in altitude which is where it has been decided that "space" or "outer-space" begins.

Of course there is a difference, at least right now. A few years ago I signed a lease on an "office space." And I park in parking "spaces" every day of my life. Real estate agents lust after "closet space," and "storage space." Hitler attacked Poland and Russia because he lusted for "lebens raum" or "living space" for his Arian utopia. Outer space is generally agreed to be that space which is outside Earth's atmosphere, and believe you me, there is a lot of it. (Way more than what little space we have here on Earth). But in the not too distant future, I may be able to rent office space that is indeed part of outer space, so the distinction will become increasingly blurred, as the centuries progress. I hope this helps.

Outer Space is defined as being beyond the orbit of the Earth, therefore a satelite in Earth's orbit would be in space, ie. beyond the Earth's Atmosphere. But not in Outer Space as it has not broken orbit.

"Space" is kinda sorta thought of as where the Earth's atmosphere thins out to the point where aircraft wings begin to no longer be effective. "Outer Space" is thought of as where the Earth's gravity is no longer dominate.

Space: 100 kilometers / 62 miles out
Outer Space: 21 million kilometers / 13 million miles out.
