Sometimes people create drama around them, that's just what makes them feel 'normal'. Most relationships in on our lives are transitory at best.
Having high motives and making better choices is key.
Until WE change our relationship patterns won't either.

When the sign says "STAY OFF THE GRASS" and you dance a little jig all over the lawn and walk away. There is your problem. It is not so much the walking off as the dance before you left.
BTW. What will space get you but solitude and you already have that? People should not ask for what they do not want. Time to learn that when things start out in a relationship the last words you ever say are "I need my space" or "I want a break." You are not far enough in the relationship to expect the other person to see that as anything other than a kiss off.
You don't need space. No one does. They need care and understanding. They need each other, or why even bother to relate to one another. You are apparently dealing with someone who cares. You took that for granted. Did he not warn you that rejection though you may see it as slight , he would take it as serious. Noone wants to force themselves on anyone. If you need space then you are asking him to be the agressor which in this day and age is sexual harassment, (any unwanted attempts at flirtation or communications of a personal nature). Consider his situation. Also, consider that this is not an isolated event.
It seems from this question that it is all about the other person. Why is that?
Give the other person the benefit of the doubt and tell them what it is you meant by space? Space can last forever if you let it. Is that what you meant?

Because most people are not forthcoming when it comes to breaking up. I need space usually DOES mean See ya buy.
Why leave it to her interpretation, why not explain what you mean.
