My best guess is because of the pressure.

It's a no-win situation. If the person tells you what he or she REALLY wants, you might consider him or her mercenary. If they don't tell you, you think they're holding out.

There's always the possibility that the person already has everything he or she wants and needs no more. In that case, a card and good wishes should be adequate.

For those whom you know well, their favorite music should be a welcome gift. For those you know even better, something more intimate -- fragrance, flowers, a bottle of wine. For someone you REALLY want to wow, a dinner date at the most popular spot in town (besides Pizza Hut, that is!)

You know what? Asking someone what they want for their birthday is the same as giving them some money and saying, "Here. Go buy yourself something because I don't have any imagination."

A gift - a THOUGHTFUL gift - comes from the heart, and represents what you know about the person you're giving it to. Nothing is more welcome than a gift from a friend that says they put some real thought into getting you something they knew you'd like.

Everytime someone asks me, I always have a list of things they can choose from. Usually about a month before my birthday I know I will be getting asked this question so I think of things I would like and tell them. If they don't want to buy any of the suggestions, they can decide for themselves or decide to get me nothing at all. If I want something I usually go buy it myself or my husband buys it for me.

I think people know what they want, but it's a matter of feeling self-conscious about actually coming right out and telling the person. For me, I wouldn't want to risk telling someone that I want something that might be totally out of their price range & I certainly don't want to come out & say "Well, how much were you thinking about spending on me??" Besides, I like to be surprised! I don't want to feel like I've handed out a shopping list of stuff to be wrapped and delivered to me on my birthday. That's no fun!!

Because my birthday is two and a half weeks after Christmas and I'm still trying to decipher what I received and what I want.

I do. I am about to be thirty and I want people to help me pay for at least half of my 9th tattoo. It will be the gift that keeps giving, because it will be there forever.
WTF???
Why all the thumbs down?
I'm being real! I am going to turn 30 years old on December 8th! I already have 8 tattoos. I want another one!
Psh. Whatever. I'm just saying not everyone doesn't know what they want for their birthday.

it's a bizarre phenomenon that can't be explained by science. i'm still regretting asking for that igloo when i live on the equator. but the swimming pool formed from the melting igloo was an unexpected surprise that worked out in my favor.

Some people know what they want but they think that they are asking too much of another person for suggesting it or some people don't really think about it until it happens because they are selfless.

I know exactly what I want next week for mine - and I put the sales leaflet for it on hubbys desk two hours ago.

I went for a test drive in it this afternoon!!

I've got some ideas. Most people don't want to be rude because they don't know how much the person asking intends to spend.
