I am an artist of soliloquys, and in that respect I am an artist not so different from Shakespeare who wrote soliloquys for his characters. Self-talk is an art in many senses of the term 'art.' Talking to oneself is not necessarily a mark of insanity, but rather can be a dramatic way of keeping one's sanity in an insane world. When done in private, it can be therapeutic and beneficial for one's mental health and facilitate the acquisition of knowledge of oneself.
When done in public, it can be dangerous for one's social health. Talking to oneself is a rebellious act in a world that belittles it and calls it into question. Self-talk can enhance one's feelings of freedom from society. Individuals who talk to themselves go against the expectations of society by doing what few dare to admit that they do, though many practice.
To dare to talk to oneself is to be true to oneself. Self-talk is a way of affirming one's beliefs by overtly expressing them, not forcing them to remain silent as mere inner cognitive activity.
Self-talk, if done at all, can become an addictive habit. It is an addictive form of art for its practitioners.
