This lets out a very bad smell if we flush anything or not. Rotor rooter told us we had a cracked pipe under our steps. We hired an independent guy who told us that the trees in the next yard roots were getting pipes clogged and our sewer needed snaking from the out side every few months. Rooter rooter wants at least 3,000 to repair the so-called pipe. Who is right and what exactly is happening. Why would this independent guy be dancing around this problem the rotor rooter diagnosed? Is there any way we can test the theory?

Most of the larger companies hire guys on commission. The more they sale the more money in their pockets. This leads to repairs that do not necessarily need to be done. You may just need the sewer line cleaned and camera inspected. I would go with a plumber you neighbor or a relative has used before.

I would start with the least expensive way first which would be to rod(snake) out the main drain. This will probably cost around $300 <> and after the drain has been rodded use some root killer to maintain the system every few months. If there is a crack then that would mean that you have two problems. The smell is probably coming from the roots and sewage back up. I am not an expert, however I have experienced this dilemma before. I hope this helps

You have a clog. You may have two (or more) main lines running from different toilets to the sewer main (outside line). If it only happens with "certain toilets", I would say the clog is in the house. Tree roots do grow into the old cast iron drainlines. This is why they are usually replaced with PVC which has a smooth exterior and roots grow "around" instead of into them.

There is a company in lemont illinois that coats the insde of your pipe. i cannot remember what the name of the company is but the will put a liner on the inside of your pipe so that tree roots will not get in the joints. I wish I could remember the name of the company but I am drunk right now. I will respond tuesday.
