When I "list" the directory files, it sorts the files in descending order. How do I sort the files in ascending order?

Use the View pull-down menu, and select Details. Then click on the Name column to sort in ascending or descending order.

I never use list view, I only use details view. All you have to do there is click on the column header (so click on name to sort ascending or descending by name, click on date to sort by ascending or descending by date.
If you must use list click View in the Toolbar and Arrange Icons By

If you choose list again while in desending order it will change to assending
