It goes back to the days when less well-off people lived in rooming houses, where they rented "rooms" ususally with shared bathrooms and little if any right to use the kitchen. Having a separate lockable space with all facilities your own was a big step forward in privacy, so you were proud that you lived "apart".

An apartment complex? The very definition of apartments suggests that they are all attached to one another, so I assume you mean that the buildings are attached, and not just the apartments themselves.

Because you are APART from everyone else, as opposed to being together, like you would be if you are in a house.
